Why is the new question, not how

I believe in setting goals and actually have accomplished many things I wanted to accomplish over the last 5 years or so by systematically planning the work and working the plan.  I listen to audio tapes and read articles about incremental improvement and breaking the big goal into a bunch of small goals.  These actions made a big difference, help me believe in myself and showed me the path to follow to achieve the desired outcome.  By completing the tasks and accomplishing the goal I thought I would have some huge aha moment that would overwhelm me with a great sense of satisfaction and pride in what I had done, but it didn’t.  Sure it was nice to step back and see what was done, but I felt more excited when I was setting the goal.  What the hell I thought.  Where is the great sense of purpose? I realized then that the “why” is more important than the how, anybody can figure out the how and maybe the ”what” or the thing I was after wasn’t as big a deal to me as I thought it was.  The journey and the inspiration for the journey is the purpose.  Everyone wants to be inspired to do something or create something and then to accomplish it, but even if they never accomplish it they still feel better than if they never reached for something better or bigger than what they reached for before.  My niece is almost 16 so I ask her about college and career choice every time we talk.  She wants to be a paleontologist and her mother wants her to be a doctor, obviously this kid is pretty smart.  I just asked her what gets her excited.  The world needs more excited people!

What excites you?

Live an exciting life and make a spectacle of yourself!
